The Staley & Hussey Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement in Promoting LGBTQ+ Equality and/or HIV Prevention
Thank you to a generous gift from Matthew Staley, an MPH alumnus of the SJSU MPH Program, a $1,000 scholarship award has been established to honor an MPH student who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in promoting LGBTQ+ Equality and/or HIV Prevention.
Matthew Staley, a SJSU MPH Class of 2000 Graduate, dedicated many years of his personal and professional life to HIV Prevention at the local, state, and national level before being forced into early retirement due to complications from the disease he worked with others to prevent.
Quin Hussey (formally Wendy Hussey), a SJSU MPH Class of 2001 Graduate, was instrumental in helping to establish an annual Diversity Event previously held on SJSU's campus. This event was one of many lifelong achievements in promoting LGBTQ+ equality.
Who is eligible to apply?
Applicants to the SJSU MPH Program and current students in the MPH Program who:
- Are LGBTQ+ identified or supportive (allies) and who has demonstrated work or volunteer experience that in some way promotes LGBTQ+ Equality and/or HIV Prevention.
- Submitted all the required materials for complete university and MPH program admissions applications (for new students).
- Will receive formal admissions acceptance into the MPH program and will enroll in the Fall 2025 MPH program (for new students).
- Have at least one year left in their course of study (for continuing students).
Required Attachments:
- Scholarship Narrative (1-2 pages, 1.5 spacing, 1 inch margins, 12 point font) describing your background, including academic, professional work, and/or volunteer experience addressing LGBTQ+ equality and/or HIV prevention. In a Word or PDF format.
- Letter of Recommendation verifying the volunteer and/or work experience addressing LGBTQ+ equality or HIV prevention. Letter of recommendation may be counted as one of the letters of recommendation required for the MPH admissions application. In a Word or PDF format.
Application and supporting documents are due by July 1, 2025. The student who is selected to collect the scholarship award will be notified by email in early August. If awards can be released earlier, we will notify the student as soon as possible via email.
